Did you know you can request a background check on your volunteers? Many organizations don't realize this is an option — since it's not a paid position, there's an assumption that screening doesn't apply. But as long as you have a signed consent form (which we require), you can request a background check on any volunteer working with your organization.

Volunteers assist children, the elderly, and animals. They work hands-on with vulnerable people in settings where trust is everything. It is essential to understand that not all people who want to volunteer have good intentions.

"Background checks keep honest people honest. Running a check is doing your due diligence when opening a door to vulnerable people. If an unfortunate event unfolds and allegations of any kind are made, the first question that usually comes up is: did you perform a background check?"

Reports We Can Run for Volunteers

County, statewide, and national criminal searches. Connecticut records go back to the 1980s and account for typos in name and date of birth.
For volunteers who transport clients or participants — essential for any role that puts a volunteer behind the wheel.
Federal crimes including embezzlement, forgery, and kidnapping are maintained in a separate court system. This search is distinct from a standard criminal report.
A nationwide registry search using all known aliases. Critical for any volunteer role involving access to children or vulnerable adults.
A broad multi-database sweep including sex offender registries, Homeland Security, Global Sanctions, and additional protective databases. An excellent pre-screen tool.
DCF Report
Available for organizations regularly placing volunteers with children or families. Useful for high-volume screening programs in childcare and youth services.
Consent Required: Under the FCRA, a signed consent form is required before any consumer report can be ordered — including for volunteers. Research Services will provide the appropriate authorization forms. A volunteer's unpaid status does not exempt them from this requirement.
