"Any person who respects you will always respect your boundaries."

Research Services works with industries whose primary responsibility is the safety of people who cannot fully protect themselves — children, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly. These are the populations most at risk when the wrong person is hired or placed in a position of trust. And they're the populations where background screening matters most.

A criminal background check tells you what the public record says about a person. For most employers, that's sufficient context. But for organizations working with vulnerable populations, the standard needs to be higher — and the searches need to be more specific.

Understanding Warning Signs

Background screening catches what's already on record. But effective protection of vulnerable populations also requires understanding behavioral warning signs — patterns that may not appear in a criminal database but that experienced professionals know to watch for.

Children & Teens
  • Insisting on one-on-one time without supervision
  • Giving gifts or special privileges without permission
  • Testing physical boundaries incrementally
  • Seeking to communicate privately via social media or messaging
  • Excessive interest in children's bodies or development
College-Age Adults
  • Using authority to isolate individuals
  • Minimizing or dismissing concerns raised by others
  • Creating conditions of dependency or obligation
  • Inappropriate personal disclosures to establish intimacy
Elderly Adults
  • Discouraging contact with family members
  • Positioning themselves as the only trusted caregiver
  • Excessive interest in finances or estate planning
  • Changes in the elder's behavior around a specific caregiver
  • Financial transactions without family awareness

The Searches That Matter Most

For organizations working with vulnerable populations, these are the searches we recommend as baseline components of any screening package:

Sex Offender Registry Search
A comprehensive nationwide sex offender registry search using all known aliases. Identifies registered offenders across all states — including their offense location — regardless of where the applicant currently lives.
National Criminal Index
An extensive multi-database search covering criminal records, sex offender registries, Homeland Security, Global Sanctions, FBI Most Wanted, and additional protective databases. This is the broadest single search we offer.
Connecticut's Public Act 16-67 employment verification is designed specifically for educational employers — private, charter, and public schools. It surfaces individuals who have an otherwise clear criminal record but a documented history of inappropriate conduct with children.
State Criminal Search
A targeted search of criminal records in the state where the applicant currently lives or previously resided. For healthcare employers, this is typically paired with a national search and OIG exclusion checks.
State Laws on Employment Denial Vary. Different states have different rules about whether and when a sex offender registration may be used to deny employment. In California, for example, employers may face penalties for denying employment in non-excepted positions based solely on registration status. Always consult legal counsel before making employment decisions based on sex offender registry results.

Industries We Serve

Research Services works with a wide range of organizations whose missions center on vulnerable populations:

  • Schools — public, private, charter, and higher education institutions
  • Healthcare organizations — hospitals, home health agencies, assisted living facilities
  • Nonprofits — youth programs, after-school organizations, volunteer-based charities
  • Adult day programs, group homes, and disability services organizations
  • Childcare providers and early education programs

For these industries, screening isn't a legal formality — it's a direct expression of the duty of care you owe to the people you serve. Research Services provides the preventative reports that help organizations fulfill that responsibility. Contact us to discuss the right package for your organization.
